I can't wait to go back to Montana.
Please locate the large brown sign on the east side of Hwy 93 for access to Flathead Lake State Park, West Shore. The map and address are currently incorrect and Goose Bay Drive is a private road. Its does not provide park access or lake access. The correct address for the park is 17768 MT Hwy 93, Lakeside, MT 59922. Please contact the park at (406) 844-3044 if you would like confirmation. We visited in June and it was not busy at this beautiful Lake Shore Park. There is limited parking in the day use areas, but the picnic area is very pretty and the beach is small and Rocky but really fun. Would be particularly nice for smaller kids as it's shallow for a long way from the shore. You can get kayaks or SUPs at the little beach shack during the summer season, and if the lake is calm there's a great little island to paddle out to. We didn't look at the campground, but the area is beautiful.
Just randomly stopped here after passing up another nearby campground. We rolled up to the booth and asked for a tent site. The gentleman was quite friendly and informed us that it was our lucky day and there just so happened to be a tent spot directly beside the lake. Turned out to be one of the best car camping spots I've ever stayed at. Phenomenal to be able to hang out in the tent and peer across the vast lake.
Anyways, even with those two small irritations, our overall experience here was great. We made friends with other campers, and my family loved being close the lake and being surrounded by nature. I know I enjoyed my early morning walks as the sun came up.
The hosts are very friendly and can be found under the one giant fluorescent streetlamp on the upper loop. They have firewood available to purchase also, which is super convenient.
Oh, and the sounds of cars and trucks rushing down nearby HWY93 are hard to miss (and ignore), so if you are looking to get away from it all, sight and sound, you might want to find another campground or find a place to hike into.
The only thing I did not like was when I reserved the camp spot online, the campground map makes it look like the upper 'A' loop is right on the lake, suggesting there's also lake access. This is incorrect. There is actually a row of privately owned homes that border the lake and there is no access for campers. You have to drive up and around (and/or walk) down to the boat launch and picnic area.
If you want to get off the beaten path but not too far off, this is the place. A quick turn off of HWY 93 puts you in this pristine campground. There are few amenities here but there are water points to fill your containers and very well-maintained pit bathrooms. There's also some larger communal bear-proof storage containers on the campground as well if you don't have your own way to secure your food.
Beautiful views. Unfortunately no dump station for campers.
